Breakfast Brief
Rocky Mountain snow, TX severe threat

A late-season severe weather threat continues into our new week in the Lone Star State, with rain spreading north. To the northwest, coastal rain and mountain snow spread from Washington and Oregon to the northern Rockies and Great Basin. The Breakfast Brief is published every Monday through Friday at 5 a.m. ET

After Sunday's severe weather tore through the southern Plains, a renewed threat is setting up from the same system across north-central Texas. Storms raced across the WeatherRadar all night long. Expect to see gusty winds, heavy rain, and isolated tornadoes today.

Heavy rain will spread on the northern end of the storm system, and a chance of a non-severe thunderstorm will be embedded. The low will quickly race north and east, producing rain from the southern Plains and lower Mississippi Valley through South Dakota and the Midwest by tonight.

The four continental time zones were officially used for the first time on this day by the U.S. and Canadian railroad systems.

The storm that entered the Pacific Northwest on Sunday will continue spreading inland. Rain and higher-elevation snow will slow down commutes this morning in places like Seattle, Portland and Medford, Ore., and Elko, Nev.

Heavy snow fell as far south as the northern Sierras overnight but will be tapering off here throughout the day.

Tropical update:

At this time, Sara continues to be the highlight in the southern Gulf of Mexico off the Yucatan Peninsula. We will continue to watch for possible further development. As Sara's remnants emerge from the Yucatan this morning, it's unlikely they will be able to reorganize in the Gulf.

There are no other areas of interest in the Atlantic Tropics over the next 7 days.

News we are covering today:

  • Severe weather threat in the southern Plains
  • Another storm for the Pacific Northwest
