Short-lived storm might form near Azores

Tropical update 0606

We continue to monitor the tropics. While far away there might be a storm forming, the western Atlantic and Caribbean remain quiet. Let’s talk about it.

A storm located near the Azores islands in the eastern Atlantic continues without tropical characteristics on Tuesday, but it is producing large waves and big headaches for mariners. There is the chance that the low acquires tropical characteristics either Tuesday or Wednesday before it moves over much cooler waters and loses this chance.

Closer to home

Not much has changed since yesterday. We are not looking into any tropical development this week through the beginning of the next one. Speaking concretely, there is no tropical development expected near the Americas through June 13.

The pattern changes by the end of June when the Madden-Julian Oscillation arrives again, giving the atmosphere an oomph to developing storms. This is a good week to review your hurricane plans and know what you would do if or when a storm threatens your area.
